Ask most people to name their favourite flower and hibiscus rarely comes up. Roses, peonies, orchids — those get all the attention. But hibiscus has quietly been doing more for us, historically and medicinally, than almost any flower we work with. It’s time it got its due.
More Than a Pretty Bloom
Hibiscus is bold by nature — large, open petals in shades ranging from soft pink to a deep, almost wine-dark red. But its real story isn’t just visual. Across the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of Asia, hibiscus has been steeped, dried, and brewed for generations, valued as much for what it does for the body as for how it looks in a garden.
The most well-known form is karkadeh — a deep red hibiscus tea beloved across Egypt, Sudan, and much of the Arab world. That striking crimson colour, almost the shade of a fine red wine, comes from the dried calyces of the hibiscus flower, and it’s just as recognisable in taste as it is in colour: tart, slightly cranberry-like, and refreshing whether served hot or over ice.
The Medicinal Side of Hibiscus
Hibiscus has long been used in traditional medicine, and modern research has started to back up quite a bit of that reputation. It’s rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, which support immune health, and it’s one of the more studied herbal teas when it comes to supporting healthy blood pressure — several studies have found that hibiscus tea may help modestly lower blood pressure in people who drink it regularly. It’s also been used traditionally to support digestion and to ease the discomfort of a common cold, often taken warm with a bit of honey.
None of this makes hibiscus a substitute for medical care — but it’s a good reminder that some of the most beautiful flowers in a garden have quietly been doing double duty as remedies for centuries.
